What document can I use as a Proof of Address?

Proof of address refers to a document or piece of information that serves as evidence of an individual's residential address for your NIF.

When applying for a NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal - Fiscal Identification Number) you must provide a proof of address.

General requirements

Your proof of address must:

  • Present your full name and match your ID, first, middle and last name, according to the documents you provided;

  • Present your full address (matching the information provided when requesting your NIF);

  • Have a clearly visible issue date, issued within the past 3 (three) months;

  • P.O. Boxes and Business Addresses are not accepted;

Be presented in the Roman alphabet, in the following languages: English, Portuguese, Spanish, French or Italian (for more information see below).

It can be one of the following documents:

Bank statement (issued within the last 3 months)

  • The document should include your full name and full address.

  • The document should clearly display the issue date.

  • The document must have been issued within the last three months.

  • Only an authentic bank statement will be accepted as proof. Other documents from the bank, such as confirmation letters or bank certificates, will not be considered valid.

Utility bill (issued within the last 3 months)

  • The document should include your full name and full address.

  • The document must clearly show the issue date.

  • The document must have been issued within the last three months.

  • Acceptable providers for the document include electricity, water, mobile SIM, internet, cable, and similar services.

Life insurance

  • The document should include your full name and full address.

  • The document must clearly show the issue date.

  • The document must have been issued within the last three months.

  • The policy must be valid at the time of submission. Lapsed policies won't be accepted.

Government letter (issued within the last 3 months)

  • The document should include your full name and full address.

  • The document must clearly show the issue date.

  • The document must have been issued within the last three months.

  • Often, the document requires an official government seal, logo, or watermark to be considered legitimate.

We strongly recommend you to scan your document.


About the document language

If you are purchasing a NIF (Tax Identification Number) and the document you are submitting is not written in the Roman alphabet, you must provide an English translation of the document.

Language Document Guidelines

If you are purchasing an NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) only:

  • If the document is not written in the Roman alphabet, you are required to provide an English translation of the document. This translation must be certified.

If you are purchasing both an NIF and a Bank*:

  • The document must be in one of the following languages: English, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, or French.

If your Proof of Address is not in any of the languages mentioned above:

Certification options for documents from the Schengen area:

  • For customers from the Schengen area, you can get your documents certified by a lawyer, notary, or any BCP branches located outside of Portugal.

Certification requirements for customers from countries outside the Schengen area or non-residents:

  • Documents can only be certified by authorized entities, such as the Portuguese Consulate/Embassy or any other entities with the Hague Apostille.

*Schengen Areas: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
