Last step for your NIE Application

How to complete the last steps of your NIE application.

Updated this week

Once your Power of Attorney (POA) has been generated and sent to you, and you have downloaded it, a few additional steps are required by the Spanish government before we can proceed with your NIE application.

Final Requirements for Your NIE Application

You've chosen the DIY Notary path, and this guide is here to walk you through every part of the process. Follow these instructions carefully to get your documents correctly notarized and sent to our legal team in Spain.

As a reminder, Spanish law requires that we have your original, physically notarized Power of Attorney (with an Apostille attached) before we can apply for your NIE.

Please remember that with the DIY option, you are responsible for all fees charged by the notary and for all shipping costs.

Step 1: Finding a Qualified Notary

Your first task is to find a notary in your area who can handle international documents. Not all notaries offer this service.

  • What to search for: Use online search terms like "notary public for Spanish documents" or "apostille services near me."

  • What to ask: When you call, confirm with them by asking two key questions:

    1. "Can you notarize a Power of Attorney for use in Spain?"

    2. "Can you also provide an Apostille for it?"

If they say yes to both, you've found the right place!

Step 2: Preparing for Your Appointment

To ensure your visit is smooth and successful, gather these items before you go:

  • Unsigned Power of Attorney: The PDF document we prepared and sent to you. Make sure to print it out.

  • Important: Do not sign it yet! You must sign it in front of the notary.

  • Your Original Passport: The notary needs this to verify your identity.

Step 3: At the Notary's Office

During your appointment, you will sign the Power of Attorney in the notary's presence. They will then add their official seal and signature.

Crucially, you must also request the Apostille. This is a separate certification that makes the notary's seal valid internationally. Without the Apostille, the document will be rejected in Spain.

Step 4: Mailing Your Original Documents to Us

Your part of the process is almost complete! Once you have the notarized and apostilled originals in hand, you must ship them to our legal team in Spain.
